Why Shopping Around for Probate Bonds Can Hurt Your Credit Score (And Your Sanity)

If you’ve been appointed as executor, administrator, or guardian, you probably received a court order requiring you to obtain a probate bond or fiduciary bond. Your first instinct might be to shop around: compare prices, submit applications to multiple companies, and find the best deal.

That makes sense, but here’s why it often backfires.

Shopping for probate bonds isn’t like shopping for insurance. Every time you submit an application to another bonding company, they’re likely to run your personal credit report. Each credit inquiry can lower your credit score. Multiple inquiries in a short period can compound the damage.

Here’s what you need to know before you click “apply” on multiple websites.

1. Every Application Means Another Credit Pull

Each bonding company may pull your credit independently. If you apply to five companies, you may see five inquiries on your credit report. Unlike mortgages or auto loans (where inquiries within 14-45 days may be grouped), surety bond applications often don’t receive that protection, and many carriers run separate credit pulls.

The result? A lower credit score, which can affect your bond premium, your ability to get approved, and even unrelated financial products like credit cards or mortgages.

2. Every Bonding Company Has Different Underwriting Requirements

Pricing isn’t the only variable. Underwriting standards differ significantly across bonding companies:

  • Some won’t write bonds if you have a felony conviction, even if it’s decades old and unrelated to financial crimes.
  • Others have strict policies around tax liens, even if you’re on a payment plan.
  • Some decline applicants with any bankruptcy history, even if it’s been discharged for years.
  • Others are more flexible but may charge higher premiums.

You might get a low quote from one company, only to be declined during underwriting. Then you’ve wasted time, damaged your credit, and still don’t have a bond.

3. We Match You to the Right Bonding Company the First Time

We work with multiple A-rated or better surety carriers. Our job is to know their appetites, their pricing schedules, and their underwriting quirks. When you apply with us, we:

  • Review your situation before pulling credit (in many cases).
  • Match you with the bonding company most likely to approve you at the best rate.
  • Leverage our relationships with underwriters to advocate on your behalf if there are any issues.

Our bonding partners are often able to match or beat any qualified quote you receive from another company. But only for apples-to-apples approvals. If another company quoted you a lower rate but would have declined you during underwriting, that’s not a real quote.

4. If You’ve Already Applied Elsewhere, Tell Us

If you mark on your application that you’ve applied with another company, our first step is usually to contact you and explain all of this. You’re almost always better off waiting for their response than applying again with us.

The exception: If you need a bond urgently, apply with us from the start. We can often issue bonds same-day or next-day for qualified applicants.

The Bottom Line: One Agent, One Application, One Smart Decision

For your own sanity and credit score, it’s best to work with one agent you can trust: someone who knows probate bonds, understands the bonding market, is familiar with various underwriting requirements, and has personal relationships with underwriters.

Don’t “shotgun” applications across the internet. It rarely saves you money, and it often costs you more in the long run. You’re free to shop around. We just want you to understand the trade-offs so you can make an informed decision.

We’re that agent.

We’ve been doing this since 2006. We specialize in probate, guardianship, conservatorship, and fiduciary bonds. We know the courts, we know the carriers, and we know how to get you bonded quickly and correctly.
